Here was a massive pop artist who writes his own stuff and isn’t sitting back waiting for the hits to come through from the professional writers. He was writing from the heart. It’s rarely noted how much of a confessional songwriter he is and how good he is at that. That was flooding out of him - at a high quality level as well.
